Business Retirement Plans

Businesses may have access to several retirement-plan structures, including 401(k), Solo 401(k), SEP IRA, SIMPLE IRA, and payroll-deduction arrangements.

01

401(k) and Solo 401(k)

401(k) plans allow employee salary deferrals and may include employer contributions. Solo 401(k) plans are designed for owner-only businesses or an owner and spouse, subject to plan rules.

02

SEP and SIMPLE IRA

SEP and SIMPLE IRA plans can offer smaller businesses alternative structures with different contribution, eligibility, and administrative rules.

03

Plan design matters

Employee count, payroll, employer contribution goals, administrative responsibilities, costs, and compliance obligations all affect which structure may fit a business.
